"If you can find a home that provides not just a roof, but also a support system and feeling of belonging, it doesn’t matter how many detours your story has taken."
I'm in the same nomadic boat. While most of my travels are spent in ecovillages and visiting community spaces to study them, I am craving a nest.
So I am moving to La Ecovilla, a sustainable community in Costa Rica. I had the best times when I was traveling in a group, and will always have that as my preference.
Even if you are technically living "alone", a community like that is everything! But of course, so is having a home base. Hopefully for you it's the best of both worlds :)
This was beautiful to read! Thank you for sharing. I’d really love to hear about what two places you’ll be trying out. My partner and I have the same criteria for a place to live and we’re planning to explore more in the coming years to figure out what place feels best. Safe and happy travels to you!
Thanks Alana! After ruling out San Diego, I'm now giving Puerto Escondido, Mexico and Valencia, Spain a test-drive — I've actually written a few other pieces about what makes both places so appealing to me personally (spoiler: a laid-back lifestyle at the beach in a Spanish speaking country). I'm a firm believer that by being intentional about where you live, you can create a life that best suits you — wishing you luck in finding your place(s)!
Excellent article Emily! Very cool that you've found a way to build a co-living style community like this.
I spent 5 weeks snowboarding in Lake Tahoe and working remotely with college friends at the beginning of my nomad journey and it stands as one of my favorite travel experiences. There's something special about getting to travel, work, and pursue hobbies with good friends - it almost feels like a cheat code.
Five weeks in Tahoe sounds like a dream! I've always wanted take a departure from my warm-weather life and do a ski trip like that. And yes, cheat code is definitely a great way to explain it!
Emily, this articulates so much of what I've been craving with the mix of travel and community. And how certain past situations - both traveling with groups AND just living as a solo adult - weren't quite as satisfying as I wanted them to be. Thank you for sharing.
Great to hear from you, Rachel! Yes for sure, mixing different styles of travel has worked well for me lately — I need my alone time now and then, but community is always what makes trips the most memorable. Just have to find that sweet spot balancing them both!
