I read her as jesting, and ultimately making the same case you’re making. If you dip into The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For, or even better the sublime The Secret to Superhuman Strength, you’ll see how consistently she turns the lens on herself. That self-mocking honesty is the point: humor loosens our grip on certainty, and once we stop taking ourselves so seriously, real connection becomes possible.

As a frequent reader of both your writing and the Communities magazine, I am fascinated by your version of modern cohousing's attempts to subvert the norms of intentional community, which is in turn subverting the norms of mainstream culture, and at the same time also trying to subvert those same mainstream culture norms. I find that the modern cohousing trends tend to be trying to get away from exactly what I think is so valuable about intentional community - shared responsibility, interconnectedness, economies of scale. But then, you're right that we need all kinds of communities for all sorts of people, and some is better than none. So I keep reading. Both you and Alison Bechdel would hate my home <3
